Searchmont Resort WETP submission for ERO.
I am a full time resident of Searchmont, residing 1.5 km from the ski hill. I have lived here with my family for 22 years. My late husband grew up here and our children are of the fourth generation to have lived here. Goulais River has always been part of our lives even before we were able to purchase a home here.
Some of my husbands ashes were put into the river he loved.
Living close to the ski hill means that we have to listen to the snow guns beginning in November 24 hrs a day (when the temp is right) until early spring. So much for peace and quiet in the country. We don’t get to hear the owls after that begins. Documents show that the ski hill has permission to draw up to 11 million gallons of water per day from the Goulais for up 80 days. This was an increase which happened without proper consultation from the community. Permission to draw water is not permission to make snow. The chemicals in Snowmax ( snow enhancer) are dangerous to the Goulais due to the phosphorous.
We get fallout snow here at our home from the snowmaking. This is due to the proximity of the ski runs to our property( across the hwy and through the forest) I have seen the number of endangered woodland turtles decrease in the pond close to the ski hill in the past 3 years. The runoff is hurting the river, the environment and the wildlife and probably the inhabitants.
Please ensure that the guidelines set out by the ministries are being properly followed. A water treatment plant with treated effluent will affect all of the watershed and out to Lake Superior and beyond.
Thank you
