Unless brought up to a standard that a bicycle can easily navigate, the trails are of little use. The Cataraqui Trail from Sydenham to Chaffey's Locks, for example, only has been improved for a kilometre or two on either side of little hamlets. Beyond that, it is only good for ATV's. It is a bone-jarring experience. The new section of the K&P Trail from Harrowsmith to Tichborne has a good surface for cycling. There are two outhouses in Tichborne and we are endeavoring to have them repaired. There should be planned and maintained outhouses along any trail in the rural areas and these should be indicated on your maps. I would recommend that the K&P Trail be multi-use excluding ATV's or dirt bikes because they often go too fast and churn up the track surface. It would be preferable that the trails be free to all non-motorized means of travel, such as bicycles, hikers or horses, as they cause no damage to the surface. We already pay for our municipal services through our taxes and I believe it is unfair to have user fees. The County of Frontenac, for example, owns the K&P Trail which passes through the County. It levies our taxes and so the Trail maintenance is already paid for. As more people retire and move from the urban areas to the rural areas, they appreciate having facilities, such as bike trails, available to them. There may be far-reaching health advantages to initiatives like the Ministry's Draft Plan
