I recently became aware that the company James Dick Construction has owned a piece of property in
the Rockwood area for more than 20 years and has applied for a Zoning Bylaw Amendment prior to
January 2013 to develop this land into a Quarry site. I am also of the understanding that James
Dick Construction has conducted some type of studies on the property that are not unbiased towards
their own needs and desires, namely profits.
I completely disagree with the rezoning of the property to a quarry site without further
environmental review and community involvement. The community has not had enough time to review the
application for rezoning, nor have they had any access to the many reports which may or may not
have been undertaken by James Dick Construction.
Upon my further investigation and discussions with neighbours and members of my community I have
concluded that there are serious concerns with the status of the water table in our area. I am
aware that there are other communities and properties in the Halton Region that have been affected
in a similar way by quarries to the extent that the properties lost considerable value due to water
issues on the land. The owners were either stuck with land that became flooded and unusable for
months at a time or with land that was too dry because the water had been diverted off the
property.
In addition to the water issues I am also concerned with the noise and the pollution. We already
have a quarry site on our road which is 6th Line Nassagaweya and we can hear and feel the dynamite
blasts from the Acton quarry site as well. This third quarry is too much and I am concerned that
property values will decrease significantly.
There are many farms in the area like ours that depend on consistent amounts of water and clean
air. The area that is considered green space by the Region will be seriously and adversely
affected. I trust you will stop this move to rezone the land and find a way to make better use of
the land for the good of the community.
