This proposal flies in the face of the decision to dismantle the OBM. The masquerade of using this Bill to streamline housing is obvious. The housing issue is a problem because you are allowing too many to live in the city, allowing corruption to rule the housing market and allowing businesses to pay money to the government to allow them to ignore development policies that are in place to preserve our residential neighbourhoods. The utter destruction of neighbourhoods is a terrible mistake that is eroding community and the spirit of Toronto. There is no accountability for the increased demand on sewage, water, roads, parking, schools, health care access or the cost to existing residents.
The quality of life for existing residents is significantly and dramatically affected in very negative ways. The noise pollution, dust pollution and litter from construction is astounding. It impacts the lives and health of residents without any accommodations. Construction crews regularly violate traffic laws and take over streets, and put residents at risk and extreme inconvenience because they don't make proper allowances for sidewalk access or driveway access. They are not only rude, but I have personally been physically assaulted by the foreman of a construction crew because I voiced complaints about them blocking the road and sidewalk without any safety measures, traffic notices or traffic direction.
Construction itself puts the foundations of surrounding homes at risk. The demolition risks the lives of pets and children and exposes residents to severe rodent problems. The impact on urban wildlife is not even considered and it is dramatic.
It is imperative that the city of Toronto be responsible and hold development companies responsible for the absolute destructive and negative impact on the neighbourhoods they influence. Allowing this Bill to pass would be an utter shame and an enormous mistake. The OBM was dismantled because of corruption and unfair practices. To replace it with a similar bill that makes room for the exact same unlawful practices would not only be a horrible decision and a shame that Toronto will carry into the future, but also just perpetuates the disgrace of the OBM. Is that what the city is trying to do?
