Having worked directly in the forest industry for the past 40 years and still active in it ,I have seen companies come and go. Those that have survived have watched as other startups have tried and failed and have learned from others mistakes. Rayonier(Tembec Huntsville) has tried the hardwood flooring production and discovered that it did not make sense to try and compete with cheaper produced offshore product .A Quebec company that has several hardwood and softwood mills is in the process of closing its own hardwood flooring plant because they cannot compete with flooring manufactured in Asia.
The closing of Tembec (Mattawa) as well as two large facilities on the Quebec side of the boarder was the result of over production and a declining wood supply into a market that was being fed with product from abroad. That product is still arriving from abroad .
The recent purchase of Almaguin Forest Products by Haliburton Forest Products may have a need for more wood supply if changes are made to that facility.
I am sure that the Algonquin Forestry Authority would be more that happy to have another client to sell product, however none of the existing sawmills around the park can survive on a steady diet of low quality tolerent hardwoods. It would be sad to see a repeat of the failed attempt that was Temagami Forest Products.
