The Niagara Water Protection Alliance (NWPA) was formed to protect the water in an aquifer that supplies potable water to wells in southern Niagara.
Our imminent threat is approval by Port Colborne Council to approve the filling of a quarry that has been depleted of aggregate materials. This is a Wet Pit that has been mined 8 meters into an aquifer.
With this challenge as our focus we support efforts that are consistent with protecting water’s purity.
Below are quotes from two sources whose opinion we support.

“Ontario Water Resources Act.
This act states that it is illegal to deposit in any body of water in Ontario any material that may impair the quality of the water. This Act is administered by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.”

“Clean Water Act.
The purpose of the Clean Water Act is to protect sources of drinking water in lakes, rivers and aquifers. This Act is administered by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks.

The Clean Water Act requires communities, through local Source Protection Committees, to identify vulnerable areas around the intakes and wells for their drinking water systems, assess risks within these areas, and develop plans to reduce or eliminate these risks. Once these plans are approved by the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, municipalities, conservation authorities, and provincial ministries have the shared responsibility to put the plans into action.”

The above quotes were copied from Grower Pesticide Safety Course, Manual, Chapter 1-How Pesticides Are Regulated pg 17.
