Ontario must have a total and permanent moratorium on extracting water for bottling in disposable bottles.
There are many instances of damaging effects on groundwater levels resulting from extraction for bottled water . Also the bottles themselves are an environmental and health disaster plus the water within them is contaminated with plasticisers from the bottles. Also the companies extracting the water are making a fortune at the expense of the communities whose water they are virtually stealing. For instance, Nestle has gotten away with extracting Ontario water without valid permit and the province of Ontario has let them. This is NOT responsible management of Ontario's water.
As just one example, at the moment Nestlé pumps 4.7 million litres of water a day from the area around Guelph. And the well it bought from under the nose of the local community would add another 1.6 million litres to that number.
In a time when climate chaos is leading to worse droughts, water is increasingly more precious and what is the Ontario government doing to protect it? They've stifled Nestlé’s newest water grab but only for the moment - why not permanently?
Our water should not be bottled and sold for profit -- it’s a public good.
