It is important that any groundwater management changes necessary to ensure ecosystem health and climate resilience are in place before the moratorium is lifted, if it should be lifted at all. Research into the impacts of existing levels of groundwater extraction is essential in this respect, especially considering the increasing population in Southern Ontario.
It would be irresponsible to allow multinational companies to extract additional millions of litres of water per day without protecting our long-term water supply. Local communities should have a greater say in decisions that directly affect the aquifers they rely on. Water belongs to the people of Ontario, and it should be managed as a public trust in the public interest, not as a commodity.
