I strongly support the proposal to amend the CFSA to ensure it remains the vehicle for implementing species protections related to forestry activities and forest management planning. The CFSA has proven to be a balanced and effective tool for forest management, in particular its effectiveness in balancing objectives which at times are in competition with each other. The ESA, by contrast, excludes all other objectives for forest management in favour of protecting selected species on an individual basis, and therefore does not deliver a balanced or sustainable approach to forestry.
My support for these changes is based on the assumption that the finalized language contains no additional conditions, restrictions, or requirements, beyond what is already contained within the CFSA or O. Reg. 242/08 under the Endangered Species Act (ESA). While removing this duplication is a critical and essential first step, species at risk prescriptions must be workable and in balance with other forest management objective, including socio-economic objectives.
