It is difficult to separate my concerns about the streamlined environmental assessment process from my concerns about this proposed greenhouse gas accelerating project in general. But I will try.
The risks to human, animal and plant life are too great to proceed with a less than thorough environmental assessment.
The proposed highway runs through many environmentally sensitive areas including the Greenbelt in Vaughan. We need to thoroughly study its impact before rushing ahead with "early works" like bridges, which would be constructed where the highway crosses some of the most sensitive areas along the route like streams, rivers, and other important natural features. Finding out after the damage was done that we have destroyed a rare species habitat is irresponsible.
A thorough study of the superhighway's potential impacts on human health MUST be completed before any work commences. Ontario Public Health Association and Environmental Defence concluded that traffic related air pollution causes 3000 premature deaths a year in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
That's now.
How will the GTA West Transportation Route affect this? Can our economy support the increased number of people disabled through respiratory diseases?
This is just one of the many questions that needs to be asked before rushing ahead with new bridges or utility relocations.
We are experiencing a Climate Emergency. For the sake of your -- and my -- health, please don't skip the step doing a FULL Environmental Assessment before rushing ahead with something we may soon wish we had never started.
