Northern Goshawks have undergone a dramatic population decline over the past few decades and are now a relatively rare species in Ontario. This species SHOULD NOT be captured for the falconry trade because of their current status. Additionally, this species does not tolerate disturbance; when I was young there were five nesting pairs around Arnprior (in the early 1960s). Now there are none, largely due to urban expansion. Attempting to capture a Northern Goshawk from the nest would surely end in nest desertion.
I have surveyed much of Ontario for birds over the past three decades and have found this species to be very rarely encountered anywhere, including the far north.
Under no circumstances should the capture of Northern Goshawks for the falconry trade be allowed.
Thank you for allowing me to provide input into this important issue.
