Response to ERO 019-1806: Proposal to expand the live capture of wild raptors (birds of prey)
by licensed falconers
As a member of Ontario Field Ornithologists (OFO), I am concerned about the proposal to increase the live capture limits of wild raptors in Ontario. This proposal lacks a thorough assessment proving the existence of stable populations, how impacts on wild populations will be assessed, and how captures will be monitored.
I do not support increasing the current limit of 25 live raptors per year to over 200. There are declines in most raptor populations in Ontario that would not support a increase in the live capture sanctioned by the proposal.
I am not in support of adding Northern Goshawks to the capture list. This species is also showing population declines.
Falconery has a long history that documents a close relationship between humans and these amazing birds. Anyone involved in the practice of falconry has a deep respect for raptors and the natural environments that support them. Passionate falconers, as well as countless dedicated bird enthusiasts, would want our provincial government to exercise caution and restraint when it comes to interfering with our natural raptor populations in Ontario.
Thanking you in advance for keeping the wild capture numbers at the current limit!
