Good evening
I have recently become a Falconer in Canada. So in saying that I have not had the opportunity to practice or fly a hawk yet.
After reading this proposal I do have some thoughts from my past experience in other parts of the world.
Growing up in Africa I was amazed at the effort that was put into birds in general by the falconry community. From the fish eagle in Kariba, Zimbabwe to the peregrine in North America and their success after the DDT issue was all driven by falconers.
The first three birds I flew were birds that flew into windows. I have rehabbed numerous birds and not just birds of prey.
When I moved to Canada my first ambition was to see how I could be involved in the research and conservation and not about finding a bird to fly.
I strongly believe that Falconers around the world strive for conservation and sustainability for future generations to get to live with theses amazing birds. by allowing this proposal I strongly feel the amount of data and research into these species will increase and the efforts to protect them will as well.
I can also say that there will be an indirect positive gain on having Falconers out there looking for nests and indigenous hawks from helping other animals, picking up litter, reporting suspicious activities etc.
I remember collecting 100s of snares in Zimbabwe looking for nests, I never took a chick if there was only one, I collected other data and info on black eagle nests, martial nests and many others that we were not allowed to fly all just because of my love for birds and the habitat they live.
