The Sarnia Lambton…

The Sarnia Lambton Industrial Alliance (SLIA) is writing in support of Ontario’s effort to create a low-carbon hydrogen strategy.

SLIA is a coalition of over 35 companies that specialize in all aspects of metal fabrication, engineering, environmental and support services supplying the heavy industrial and manufacturing sectors. SLIA member companies employ over 5,000 skilled trades people servicing hydrogen producers such as Air Products, Praxair, NOVA Chemicals, CF Industries, and Imperial Oil, among others.

Sarnia-Lambton is home to Ontario’s largest cluster of hydrogen producers and users. Hydrogen is used as part of the chemical process associated with oil refining, plastics, and ammonia production. SLIA member companies have long standing relationships with both the Petrochemical and Biochemical sectors. Not only are SLIA companies already working directly or indirectly within the hydrogen economy, they are the reliable supply chain with the know-how and experience to advance Sarnia-Lambton as the hydrogen hub for Ontario.

SLIA recognizes that developing a hydrogen strategy is a complex undertaking. A strategy that removes barriers associated with the development and implementation of a low-carbon economy should be considered a critical part of this plan. Ontario’s low-carbon hydrogen strategy needs to identify a means of creating predictability, long-term demand for low-carbon hydrogen and industrial products before it is feasible for industry to invest in these projects. Policy and regulation must include access to incentives, innovation, electricity pricing, industry standards and trade in order to make the hydrogen economy viable.

SLIA believes that the low-carbon hydrogen economy presents a significant opportunity for Ontario, SLIA members have the expertise to help position the province to be a leader in this field and would welcome the opportunity to help develop a provincial hydrogen strategy.
