As a local resident to this proposal, I completely disagree with it. Although I have several concerns, my primary one is the risk this puts to our water supply. Miller will inevitably dump material on the site, which will leach into our water supply. We’ve heard anything dumped will be tested. This is a compliance issue. Problem is, they haven’t been compliant with the initial issues of the site, why would they be compliant going forward. I read on the MNRF site that one of their roles is compliance. This existing site is an eye sore today.....all kinds of material, equipment etc dumped at the site in plain view of anyone driving or walking by. That wasn’t supposed to happen. Where are the agrreed to burns to hide this. NOT compliant.
Back to water. I live in an estate subdivision immediately adjacent to the pit. We are all on well water here. If one single contaminated load gets dumped into this site, the water quality of all home in this subdivision could be compromised. And when that happens, there is no reversing it! Miller doesn’t care about the water supply. They care only about their economic well being. Testing random loads won’t insure that only clean fill is dumped.....and people can (and will) be “bought off” to allow knowingly contaminated fill to be dumped there. If our water gets contaminated, will Miller pay to have city water systems installed in all affected homes. No they won’t.
Lastly, and this is a great concern, if Miller is allowed to do this, what will stop the same from happening to 40 plus gravel pits in the Uxbridge area. Think back to waste dumping issues in the Port Hope area. That area has never fully recovered (economically or from a health standpoint) from that issue which took place decades ago. We don’t want Uxbridge to be known as the next Port Hope in future years.
If the MNRF is truly in place to look after the well being of Ontario residents, they will not approve this proposal from Miller.
STOP this proposal!
