RE: Agriculture Impact Assessment (AIA) Guidance Document
The following is a formal response to the Agriculture Impact Assessment (AIA) Guidance Document currently listed on the Environmental Registry.
The Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA) is supportive of the inclusion of landscape architects as “Qualified Professionals” in this document, as it recognizes the skills portrayed by our members. Landscape architects are known as professionals that can lead multi-disciplinary teams in the analysis and recommendation related to mitigation of impacts, public health and safety, impacts to landform and landuse, protection of the environment, and stewardship of the land.
The Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA), founded in 1968, is the self-regulating association representing the profession. As background information, the use of the title landscape architect or any derivative thereof is protected in Ontario by the authority of the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects Act 1984. Only full members of OALA are permitted, by law, to use the title landscape architect or to hold themselves out as providing landscape architectural services.
The OALA promotes public understanding of the profession and the advancement of the practice of landscape architecture. In support of the improvement and conservation of the natural, cultural, social and built environment, OALA undertakes activities to improve the quality of life and the environment for all Ontarians including the public realm in urban centers. Our activities include promoting the benefits of landscape architecture to governments and professionals who develop standards and policies.
Landscape architects in consultation with allied professions, the public and elected officials are important partners in designing safe and attractive spaces that enhance community. We are the site planning and design experts that assist in solving complex problems related to land-use planning, site design, storm water management and surface water runoff, land development, rehabilitation and safe designs that deter crime.
The OALA would be pleased to provide more information on the role of landscape architects in Ontario. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to our Executive Director Aina Budrevics (executivedirector@oala.ca) if you would like more information or to set up a meeting.
Sincerely,
ONTARIO ASSOCIATION OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS
