In general I am in favor of…

In general I am in favor of establishing a conservation reserve on the south shore but only if it increases and hopefully enhances protection of the ecological integrity of the site. It is very important that the last undeveloped shoreline of Lake Ontario (Canadian side) be kept wild. In fact I would encourage more action on the part of the government to secure all remaining private lands along the south shore to establish a complete zone of protection along the shoreline.

My misgivings are as follows:

1) Making a "parK' may increase visitation without adequate safeguards in place to protect the ecological integrity of the site.

2) Allowing current recreational activities continue. - In general good but some control on the widespread use of ATVs needs to be undertaken - at least an enforced designated trail system and the means to resources to enforce it. ATV use is the single greatest negative impact on the site as it stands now. Protecting it from development, forestry and mining is no good if nothing is done about irresponsible ATV use.

3) Will the managing body (MECP) have sufficient resources to properly protect and manage this property? The track record of this government is not good in this regard.

4) in addition to enforcement to protect ecological integrity, this site requires rehabilitation work to protect and expand the alvar communities. Invasive species, particularly Dog-strangling vine, control is needed. Again will this be just a CR in name or will some active conservation actually take place.

I look forward to the management planning process and hope that real protection will result for this unique site in Ontario.
