This legislation is misguided and short-sighted at best. Plundering our non-renewable green spaces to enrich developers in the name of ‘faster housing’ is absurd. It isn’t a lack of land that is creating a bottleneck in the housing supply. It is a decades long devotion to prioritizing detached single-family dwellings and suburban sprawl over more efficient and denser construction. Even were that not the case, developers are already building as fast as they can. Between supply chain issues and a lack of skilled trade workers, construction is currently at its max capacity.
Limiting the authority of conservation authorities to properly oversee the environmental impacts of construction not removing ‘red-tape’, it’s removing carefully considered and necessary oversight in favour of a wild-west approach to the continuation and propagation of poor planning practices and ignores reality.
