I am opposed to any removal of greenbelt lands to expand development, even with proposed additions.
This is a misleading proposal, as the additional lands were already committed to prior to the proposed removals, and is being misrepresented as a fair trade.
The lands being removed currently protect parts of the oak ridges moraine aquifer, which is critical to clean water security in many parts of Ontario.
The areas provide critical connections to maintain biodiversity and sustainable ecosystems. Cutting off areas of the belt will lead to species decline and damage carbon-capturing green space that lessens our contribution to Climate Change.
The greenbelt has helped the GTA to reduce sprawl, protect the natural environment and provide access to more food for the region. The greenbelt is playing a role in increasing densities in the GTA. Higher densities and lower sprawl help in reducing the cost required in maintaining roads and sewerage system. This in turn translates into lessening the cost burden on municipalities.
