The Central Pickering Development Plan was drafted after in-depth studies and wide consultation with experts and stakeholders.
Changing it on such a short timeline is contreproductive and will not benefit the community. Because of lack of infrastructure, traffic issues, increased taxes and because the units but will be hastily built and overpriced, this will create more problems without provide much needed affordable housing.
Such a project cannot be successful if it is quickly put together.
In addition:
- Pickering is already involved in a major urban project with the Seaton development, which will bring 70,000 new residents. The issues of traffic, infrastructure, affordability and amenities have not been resolved for Seaton. Starting another building initiative in Pickering is premature.
- The area taken from the Greenbelt on Map 6 is too close to West Duffins Creek, a pristine cold water watercourse.
- We need these fertile agricultural lands close to the city to provide locally grown food to our community and this is what they should be used for: to grow local organic food (instead of the cash crops grown on the land owned by developers - who were biding their time).
