I do not support this proposal to remove parcels (or any part) of the Greenbelt. By definition, this is permanently protected environmentally-sensitive land. I do not accept that it is necessary to develop the proposed parcels of land in order to achieve the goal of building more homes faster.
According to the report by The Housing Affordability Task Force (struck by the provincial government in December 2021), “a shortage of land isn’t … the problem. Land is available, both inside the existing built-up areas and on developed land outside greenbelts.” Building outside of existing urban boundaries does not build homes faster; in fact it will waste resources that could be used to increase density in and around major transit hubs with the added benefit of reducing the need for long-distance commuting by car and associated GHG emissions.

I also do not accept that a “land swap” is a reasonable trade-off: permanent protection does not mean that a government can chip away at the protected areas or trade them. This is not a game of cards.

This is a proposal to sacrifice precious greenbelt land and it will not achieve the objective of creating more housing. Build within existing boundaries, increase densification, reduce red-tape, but leave the Greenbelt alone!
