In 2018 Doug Ford publicly announced he would not touch the Greenbelt after voters voiced their displeasure. What has changed now? Nothing yet we are back to considering demolishing a key part of our environment and ecosystem.

Having fertile land such as the Greenbelt is incredibly important, especially as we face an ever worsening climate crisis. We cannot "add land" elsewhere, there is no comparison to the benefits the greenbelt plays.

We should not be playing into the hands of developers who will make a buck off the destruction of the e environment. The cost of this will be billed to the residents, for example when they live in a flood plain and it floods due to increasing rains and weather disturbances. The developer doesn't pay for flood insurance, the homeowner does.

We don't need more sprawl that will only be serviced by cars. We should welcome immigration but not at the expense of the environment. This government is blaming immigrants for this. Why not promote density in our existing neighbourhoods in cities. Build sustainable dense housing for young adults and families. Attacking the greenbelt solves none of this. All we're doing is killing animals and biodiversity. Many young people who are our growing population would live in a city that supports growth of families, adequate open space and good transit.

In these times we should be growing the greenbelt with sustainable initiatives. We should not be destroying more land to make up for past mistakes, rather focusing on targeted issues that address the housing needs met in cities with realistic solutions. Solutions that will allow Ontario to continue to maintain its farmland and biodiversity for decades to come. It's disgusting that the government turns its back on the wishes of the population for a few kickbacks of developers that don't care about the people nor the environment, but the bottom line.
