The proposed plan to develop on the existing Greenbelt in Grimsby will only create new problems for Niagara and its residents. It seems like a solution for the housing crisis for those in the GTA, but it further contributes to our infrastructure limits, congestion, and the climate crisis we’re also up against.

There is no infrastructure in Grimsby to support all these new homes, people, and cars. Our streets cannot be expanded, we do not have public transit, and the residents moving in mostly commute out of town, creating congestion on the QEW and increasing the amount of idling emissions.

Why are we trying to cram more houses in such a confined space? Why not build on the escarpment? There is no space between the lake and escarpment to build and add and build and add. Why not look to creating access to the QEW from the Niagara escarpment similar to how Hamilton built the Red Hill Valley expressway? We need green spaces below the escarpment and between the lake. This space cannot just be filled with condos, as our roads cannot support their commuter traffic. There are many areas where development can occur without creating such problems that will inevitably occur if more houses come to these proposed areas. Create the roads, build the communities needed to help with housing, but don’t destroy an already weakened small town with limited area.
