Economists are clear that carbon pollution ought not to remain an externality without a price that would send a necessary market signal to major emitters. A meaningful price on carbon would also help Ontario’s innovators in clean energy and efficiency to lead in this rapidly growing sector of the global economy.
The proposal to take Ontario out of a carbon pricing regime is a poorly conceived and short term political play. At a time when carbon emissions must be reduced to mitigate the worst effects of ongoing climate change due to human activity, this proposal would put Ontario on the wrong side of history.
I want Ontario to put a price on pollution, making polluters pay for their emissions and returning the revenues to the pockets of Ontarians so they can lower their carbon footprint.
