Legislation in this vein would be a remarkable step back for the province of Ontario and would only encourage more Ontarians to leave at the soonest opportunity. A suitable substitute to address housing issues would be to utilize already developed areas that are unused or inefficiently used. Focus on this, better sustainable infrastructure/urban planning, and shifting zoning to make Ontario land use efficient. If one seeks to use repurposing land as a tool this would be a much better step toward solving the problem rather than ruining one of the province’s, relative few, strong points: the green belt.
I would also care to remind the reader that the value of the green belt to the health and well-being of Ontarians themselves, not just the environment, is notable. It is one of the last paragons of social cohesion in this province and in a system where our other social infrastructures, educational and medical for example, are being broken down if not dismantled it should be that much more paramount to protect the Greenbelt. Ontario is, in fact, a community protect the Greenbelt to show Ontarians this community still exists and to recommit as leaders that the broken parts of the community will be fixed.
