This proposal should be rejected because it is a slippery slope to allow portions of the greenbelt to be developed to add such a small number of homes. If the government is serious about providing additional housing options for those in the GTA, they would not need this much land to build 3.3% of their goal (50000 of 1.5 million homes).
Efforts should be focused on zoning within the cities in the GTA, improvement of local transit systems and improved intercity rail networks, rather than permanently damaging protected areas to continue the pattern of urban sprawl. Adding sprawling neighbourhoods will cause additional commuting traffic which will lead to expansion of existing highways which will then lead to further sprawl. This cycle of sprawl cannot be allowed to so easily continue.
I encourage you to view the video linked about the "Missing Middle" which is a brief video created by a Canadian-born youtuber addressing why North American cities often struggle with urban sprawl. The video summarizes how car-centric housing zoning in the USA and Canada leads to housing options being largely limited to either condo towers in a downtown or single family homes in sprawling neighbourhoods.
