I am in support of extending the leases at Rondeau for the next two years while a long-term solution can be found. However it has been horribly disappointing and unacceptable that this needs to happen once again due to inaction by the Ministry, especially since a solution was in place quite some months ago. Cottagers have had their septic systems inspected and in some cases upgraded to ensure they met environmental standards, and have had to make repairs and maintenance to their properties even though their situation remains tenuous. The interim Order in Council specified leases were to remain until December 31, 2038, while ongoing discussions could occur regarding a long-term solution. Now there is a threat of another lease expiry date. It is important that a solution must be found for permanent occupancy of the cottage lots, sold to the cottage leaseholders, under Sec. 9(3) of the Provincial Parks & Conservation Reserves Act. Rondeau was established and originally chartered for cottaging, and the cottagers have been a part of the Rondeau landscape for some 75 years. The cottage footprint is very small, and the cottages contribute to the sprit, the heart, the history and the overall character of Rondeau Park, and connect it to the Chatham-Kent (and region) community. The cottages contribute to the ongoing stewardship of the Park and contribute substantially towards its financial sustainability. Your consideration and support would be greatly appreciated.
