The Greenbelt is a provincially protected area surrounding the GTA and is vital for climate resilience and food security. There is clear evidence that wealthy developers have bought up land hoping for a large (and now seemingly guaranteed) payout. We need more homes for people in Ontario, but single-family McMansions in vitally important ecological areas to make rich developers richer is not how to address our housing challenges. Please reconsider this motion to open the Greenbelt up to development — it is a destructive act that will do nothing to help the people most impacted by housing insecurity, and will make Ontario more vulnerable to ecological disaster in the long term.
