Thank you for allowing me to comment. My comments are as follows:
- The proposed areas of development, "edges of the green belt", are currently negatively impacted by the surrounding developments and have reduced biodiversity and naturalization. If we open these "edge areas" to housing they will create new edges which lack of necessary biodiversity and naturalization causing increased loss of environment which we cannot afford
- In general opening the greenbelt is not ideal from an environmental point of view. The green belt serves a purpose to provide a natural area around a developed area where water and air can be purified naturally and wildlife can thrive. Opening the greenbelt will set a unstoppable precedent that will allow future development.
- We can build houses but we cannot build a greenbelt, we can only preserve it
- The proposal to open the greenbelt seems to lack any creative thought whatsoever. For example, the following could be considered when building new homes to consider profit, people and the planet:
- Ensure every home is multi-family (duplex) to provide more housing per area
- Ensure homes are net zero or net zero ready
- Encourage co-op developments to make living more affordable
- Instead of opening the greenbelt, why not mandate that any new homes built in existing cities must be duplexes or high density. Presently we have older homes on large plots of land being knocked down to built massive single family homes. This land is already near critical infastructure and can be redeveloped to better serve the needs of the province without sacrificing the greenbelt.
- Housing development has not slowed down in Canada (every city has new housing being built) and there is not a lack of space, there is a lack of forward thinking. Presently too many luxury homes, single homes and condos are being built, which is what will continue to be built in these proposed areas. Finding more areas to do the same thing is not a solution. We need to change the process as a whole, as mentioned above when considering people plant and profit.
