I oppose this proposal to remove 15 parcels of land from the Greenbelt. As the province's Task
Force on Housing Affordability said in its report from earlier this year, the greenbelt is not a limiting factor to providing housing for Ontarians, there is enough developable land available inside the existing built-up areas. Thus, there is no need to remove or change any parts of the Greenbelt. Doing so would reduce the amount of natural land and the ecosystem services that it provides, including habitat for wildlife and protection from floods. Reducing the arable farmland inside the Greenbelt is equally foolhardy, it is some of the most productive farmland in Canada.
Finally, changing the boundaries of the Greenbelt on the flimsiest of pretences sets a terrible precedent that will encourage further reductions. If developers can successfully lobby for changes to the Greenbelt this time, there will be no stopping further demands for erosion. The Greenbelt was designed to contain and shape the growth of the greater Toronto region and it should be allowed to do so with its boundaries intact. Anything less will condemn it to eventual destruction.
