I strongly disapprove of the province's plan to rezone the Greenbelt for development.
I am a strong proponent for building more (affordable) housing in our province, but doing so by rezoning delicate ecosystem in the Greenbelt is not the solution. We have underused and underdeveloped land already. People like myself want to live close to where things are – close to good jobs, transit, arts, food and culture. I'd encourage the province to work with municipalities to develop on lands we already have – densifying existing neighbourhoods near existing (sometimes, underused) infrastructure, making missing middle housing (4-6 stories) legal by right, and tackling local NIMBYism that slows the speed of development. Encouraging sprawl into our Greenbelt of single-family homes further away is neither environmentally nor economically the right solution here.
Again, I want to see housing become more affordable, especially for younger generations and newcomers. But chipping away at the Greenbelt is not the way to do it.
