I agree with the problem of housing in the greater toronto area but not. with this solution.
In fact of anything , we will make it worse.
Why you ask? It is because our current housing is mostly zoned in such a way that it only allows single family homes, and even after this amendment, it will only result in destroying teh greenbelt and making more single family homes.
The way to address the problem of housing by changing the way our zoning laws work . We should allow more mixed use developments and mid level rises in areas of the GTA where only single family houses are. This will solve the problems and allow us to make 1.5 million new homes in the next 10 years easily in existing land rather than develop[ing new land, building more roads and getting more cars to places which are far away from city centers in the GTA.
This land grab will only help developers and corporations owned by DeGasperis family, who have bought parcels of land in this greenbelt and now will profit once it is passed. I do not want to hypothesize on how they got wind of this happening, because many of these lands have just changed hands
The proposal is incoherent with the Ontario governments won assessment (housing task force) that the lack of available land is NOT the reason for Ontario's housing woes.
This is also against Doug ford's own promise that the government will not touch the greenbelt (2018)
Lastly, I am sure that even if passes , it wont solve housing crisis. Houses will be developed in such a way by uilders (read VERY Slowly) that prices will continue to be high
