What happened with The Greenbelt Plan? The set of policies that protects farmland, countryside, and natural areas, why the government wants to take portions of the protected lands? These natural areas clean the air, provide drinking water, provide diverse flora and fauna habitats, including pollinators, and they provide opportunities for recreational activities that benefit public health and overall quality of life.
The Greenbelt Plan, together with the Growth Plan, the NEP and the ORMCP work in concert with Ontario’s Climate Change Strategy which is the government commitment to meet its long term targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Our premier is totally wrong by taking protected land, saying in exchange take another land from elsewhere and make them part of the greenbelt, it does not make any sense, those lands he plans to add are already protected. The argument that you could take land out, particularly along the southern edge, and add it on the outer edge as he is proposing would mean in the near future, the Greenbelt will migrate. It’ll end up in northern Simcoe County. If he says he is so smart he should come up with better solutions that don’t touch the greenbelt, we need to keep these lands protected, they are the future for our next generations, these lands are an important part of the solution for the climate change we are currently experiencing.
