As a tax-paying citizen of Ontario and the GTA region, I do not support the proposed amendment of the Greenbelt Plan. The Ontario government's Housing Affordability Task Force has recognized that the lack of affordable housing in Ontario is not due to land use restrictions, but rather inefficient use of available land. The housing affordability issue will not be solved by building more of the same patchwork of disconnected subdivisions. There are far superior options available, such as increasing urban infill and promoting public transit.
Developing these areas will not only harm the ecology of our beloved province but it will promote a further lack of sustainability through increased urban sprawl and place a greater load on municipal finances in the years to come.
Further, the government has provided zero guidance on the environmental impact of removing these Greenbelt spaces. Adding 2,000 extra hectares is a nice gesture, but the original 7,000 hectares that are being proposed for removal from the Greenbelt's protection are highly valuable from an ecology and watershed management standpoint.
Once again, I do not support this proposed amendment to the Greenbelt Plan.
