I am totally opposed to the Ford government's plan to develop the greenbelt. It's short-sighted, politically motivated and completely irresponsible. While affordable housing is an issue, the net benefit of 50,000 homes in Ontario's greenbelt does not outweigh the impact of climate change and extreme weather events that are occurring more and more frequently because of human development. Paving over arable farmland, forests, and grasslands will degrade water quality, increase the risk of flooding, further damage air quality and lead to increased carbon in the atmosphere, and exacerbate food insecurity through the removal of both farmland and the natural environment that sustains pollinators. I would like to see the Ford government weigh the financial value of nature against the cost of maintaining the housing and settlement infrastructure for the next 20, 30 or 50 years. This decision is unnecessary, against public opinion, environmentally catastrophic and I hope, politically devastating for the Ford government.
