Increasing the area of the greenbelt is a magnificent idea. The more natural land we have the better for us.
We need to maintain all the arable land we have. The world isn't making anymore. If we can produce food close to urban areas such as the golden horseshoe and Barrie we can reduce transportation and therefore greenhouse gas emissions.
We need to protect our aquifers. Our province already has issues with potable water. With more people living between the greenbelt and lake Ontario we will need more drinking water not less.
Just because land is close to a previous development doesn't make it appropriate for development too. A buffer between urban areas and natural areas is necessary.
We can increase housing by building 6 plexes, town houses, low rise apartments and other medium density housing in areas of current low density.
New development should only occur on land that is not useful for any type of agriculture, does not act as a buffer, does not protect drinking water, and will not require new highway infrastructure .
Perhaps some of the proposed parcels meet these criteria but most do not.
We must protect the land we live on. Let's respect future generations and respect our indigenous truths about living with the land.
