The government promised that they would not allow development on Greenbelt land as part of it's election platform. It should not break this promise, even with an excuse that this action is required to build more homes.
In a province the size of Ontario it is hard to believe that land outside the Greenbelt can not be found to build houses.
It is also naive to believe that the houses built on the newly released Greenbelt land will be affordable. The province should add a requirement that a reasonable proportion of the new homes are "affordable". This point has been expressed by municipal politicians in my community.
The absence of any requirement around affordability makes this look like the province is just pampering to the developers. I am now reading reports that some of these developers are closely associated with the Conservative Party in Ontario.
All this makes this proposal look less like a real attempt to address affordability and more like a ill-conceived attempt by the government to be seen to be doing something and, at the same time, keeping their rich supporters happy.
