I do not think that we should be removing 7400 acres from the greenbelt. Especially in Ontario, because we are the most densely populated region in Canada, we need to preserve as much greenbelt as we can, for agriculture, recreation, and simply to protect nature and wildlife ecosystems. Other provinces have far more green space than we do, and a more healthy balance between nature and human activities. As a social worker I know that protected natural spaces are important for our physical and mental health. In terms of climate change impact, we need green space with a diversity of plants and trees to help reduce carbon in the air. If we keep building on greenbelt land, we will have little in the way of healthy ecosystems. I wonder if we are having coyote issues in my area because they are losing their habitat and thus encroaching more and more into densely populated areas. It is sad that we do not have the respect for nature that we should considering how dependent we are on natural resources for our very survival. Are there not some planning and building solutions that could make better use of land that is not greenbelt? Like more dense housing in already developed areas? For Ontario, especially southern Ontario, I think this has to be the approach, rather than diminishing our greenbelt lands.
