We have seen vast reduction of green space across the province. The Greenbelt was created to protect our precious food-growing and recreational areas, home to many species of wildlife, a growing number of which are at risk or endangered. Biodiversity is essential to the planet and our own well-being. Wetlands are vital to biodiversity. If you reduce green space and wetlands, one of many negative effects include reduced health for Ontarians. That alone will cost billions downstream. The Golden Horseshoe that wraps around the greenbelt is one of the best regions for growing healthy and local food.
I do not support this proposal and am telling others who live outside the Greenbelt, how a threat to it, affects them too.
An article I read today, and there are many other critics of your proposal including this the auditor herself.
The audit found that over the past 20 years, the percentage of urban land considered "green" declined by 94 per cent in Ontario's medium and large urban centres.
It also found no provincial strategy exists to conserve wetlands, in particular, as previous targets were nixed by the Ford government in 2018, even though southern Ontario has been losing an average of 1,825 hectares of wetlands a year already.
