When I came to Ontario I was a renter, not being able to afford to buy a house. I lived here for over 20 years as a renter. When my parents died my inheritance allowed me to buy a house in the area I loved in central Toronto - interesting neighbourhoods, with lots of diversity in people, sports, and especially cuisines. I could only afford to buy because I rented out the basement apartment. I still rent out the basement apartment because it allows me to contribute to the next generation. But I also rent it out because I cannot afford to enjoy my city, all the nearby hiking trails and the more distant natural parks in Ontario.
Bill23 and all the required "messing around" with various government policies (eg Planning Acts) makes it clear that the government has no concern with providing housing for all. There is nothing in the Bill that helps with providing rental housing - which is what we most need. Using the Greenbelt -the recreational lands and the food providing lands that middle class people like me can afford to enjoy - does nothing to provide housing for people like me - or the younger me that first came to Toronto. Housing in Greenbelt lands will be for the wealthy, in the distant suburbs who can afford to commute long distances, and enjoy their large (excessive by global standards) property. I am appalled that government lies so boldly by suggesting this bill about housing for all, when it should be called " Favours for Ontario's Construction industry."
