First let me say that in my view, it was a big mistake to cancel the cap and trade system. It was generating substantial revenue and created thousand of jobs in the green energy sector, many directed to the small business doing house retrofits.
As we saw in the Gatineau few weeks ago, Ontario is not immune to climate change. I also believe we have a moral obligation to lead in decarbonising the economy. We also must recognize that leader in low carbon economy will be the driver of economic growth in the next decades.
Therefore:
I want a real climate change plan to reduce emissions. Help people save energy and create jobs in the $26 trillion clean economy.
Subsidies to improve house efficiency generate a large number of jobs for middle-class workers, the group this government claims to be supporting. A carbon tax redistributed in the form of rebates for workers who need transportation gasoline for work (as opposed to inefficient cars/trucks used mostly for private transportation).
I want Ontario to push for the federal government to end subsidies and handouts for fossil-fuel companies and redirect this money to clean energy solutions in the proportion of our (Ontario) economy.
I want legally binding emission's targets in line with our obligations to the Paris Climate Agreement.
