Conservative governments of various stripes spent the last 20 years denying that global warming was happening. When that failed, they shifted to denying that carbon taxes are an effective way to address the problem. They were wrong then and they are wrong now.
The Nobel prize in economics was just awarded to an economist who has shown that carbon taxes are the most efficient way to reduce carbon emissions. The current government should take heed. The claims that these taxes come on the backs of consumers and should be put onto the largest polluters is empty. All costs are ultimately borne by consumers. The government is simply trying to obfuscate and hide the costs. This has long-term negative effects for the overall economy and for individual consumers. The only benefit is to the political parties that wish to confuse matters.
A revenue-neutral carbon tax is best for consumers, especially low- and middle-income earners. The government of Ontario should withdraw this bill that will have a negative impact on our pocket books, our economy, and our environment.
