I am writing to express my unequivocal support for the inclusion of nuclear energy as a key component of Ontario's clean energy future as detailed in your Pathways to Decarbonization report. This report resonates with me, and with many Ontarians, who see the urgent need for reliable, non-emitting energy sources in our fight against climate change.
The assertion that a non-emitting electricity grid is achievable in Ontario, with nuclear energy as a fundamental part of that grid, is a perspective I strongly endorse. The ability of nuclear power to deliver stable, reliable, and clean energy makes it indispensable in our energy mix.
I also want to underscore the importance of refurbishing our existing nuclear plants to extend their operational lifetimes and maintain their contributions to our energy grid. These plants have served Ontario well, and with proper refurbishment, they can continue to provide the clean and reliable power we need.
Moreover, the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) presents a promising avenue for expanding our nuclear capabilities. Their smaller size, scalability, and potential for lower initial capital investment make them a fitting choice for our diverse energy needs. They offer an opportunity to bring the benefits of nuclear energy to more communities, including those in remote locations.
Finally, I believe we should also consider the construction of new large-scale nuclear reactors. While SMRs have their advantages, large reactors can deliver enormous amounts of power and play a major role in meeting the growing demand for clean electricity in Ontario.
The message from your report is clear: a switch from fossil fuels to clean electricity is not only possible but also beneficial for Ontarians. Nuclear energy, with its capacity to provide reliable, non-emitting power, is an integral part of this switch. I am excited about the future of nuclear energy in Ontario and look forward to seeing how IESO will continue to lead in this area.
Thank you for your commitment to a clean and sustainable energy future for Ontario.
