it is with deep concerns regarding Bill 4 and abolition of Cap and Trade program that I write this message. while evidence of climate change is all around us it is difficult to imagine that our provincial government is more committed to big and small business than to the environment. premier's recent proclamation that he is taking action to reducing pollutants from large trucks etc appears to be window dressing as concern about our environment. pollution from large trucks makes only a small contribution to the overall level of pollution problem. its good to reduce diesel emissions however lets not abandon the resources to penalize polluter and move those resources to companies and individuals who are developing innovative ways to reduce greenhouse pollutants.
during a recent conversation with local MPP's office to express concerns regarding Bill 4 was told that government's emphasis is to provide jobs and grow the economy "that's what we campaigned on and that's what we are doing". whos does not want to support job and economy growth??? however at what cost? it is the government's role to educate it's citizens on the dangers of climate change. the evidence of changes is overwhelming and the health of our planet is in danger. lest we think that giving companies the right to pollute in order to improve their bottom line is justifiable, please give thought to long term impact of polluting the environment. the number and severity of storms is increasing (another hurricane "Michael" is forming as I write this comment) and is far out of proportion to anything we have seen in my life time that exceeds 70 years.
government's policies are regressive and destructive. don't hide behind the fact that people want jobs. of course they do. it is the government's responsibility to educate its citizens as to the impact if we get our policies backwards. lest we forget there are generations to follow us. I have seven and four year old granddaughters and I speak on their behalf. the nearsightedness and selfish interests of politicians who develop policies to serve their selfish career interest will be reaped not only by my grand children but all of our grandchildren. when asked what I did to reduce my impact on environmental damage I will be able to say that we have reduced the cooling and heating of our house to reduce energy consumption, reduced our travels and reduced gas, repurposed our possessions and bought slightly used clothing to reduce waste and our next care will a hybrid/ just to mention some of the ways I/we are contribution. additionally will let them know that I participated, voted and expressed my concerns to the government of the day about environmental issues and concerns.
this year's Nobel Prize economists William Nordhause and Paul Romer received their award for their work on the economics of climate change and the UN issued a dire warning about global warming. do the right thing for the country, the province and mine/our grandchildren because environmental changes are happening NOW!!! I urge you to vote against Bill 4.
