There needs to be closer monitoring of where bait is being sold, and where the bait is being used. I don't want to see species being used in a waterbody where the bait fish is not native to. We can keep pushing the idea of not dumping bait buckets, but it'll happen either way. If a bait bucket ends up being dumped, at least the species being used won't disturb the natural food chain. As un-free market as this sounds, there should be policies put in place to ensure that specific species such as bluntnose minnows are being sold in areas where blunt nosed minnows are native to... There should be a cooperative effort by both bait vendor and bait producer to ensure that all bait sold are ecologically friendly. Even though this may cause people to simply dump bait buckets more often, it's worth the policy, for ecological sake.
