Re: ERO 013-3738
Bill 4, Cap & Trade Cancellation Act, 2018
Dear Sirs:
The Ontario Rivers Alliance (ORA) is a Not-for-Profit grassroots organization acting as a voice for several stewardships, associations, private and Indigenous citizens, who have come together to protect, conserve and restore riverine ecosystems.
It is important to first state that although the Cap and Trade program was not perfect, it brought significant revenue into the provincial coffers, and funded important innovation, efficiencies and low-carbon programs. The few cents added to our gas fill-up was hardly noticeable. That being said, this is a great opportunity for the Province to come up with an effective Greenhouse Gas reduction strategy that will not just reduce carbon and result in cleaner air, but at the same time create well-paying jobs.
ORA offers our full support for the:
• Recommendations as set out in the Environmental Commissioner of Ontario’s comprehensive report, Climate Action in Ontario: What’s Next? 2018 Greenhouse Gas Progress Report, Part 5: Summary of key recommendations.
• Implementation of a model similar to the United Kingdom’s Climate Change Act.
• Ontario Clean Economy Alliance’s submission.
We are grateful for this opportunity to comment and look forward to a meaningful science-based Climate Change plan with effective carbon reduction targets.
Effectively addressing climate change is crucial to our present and future generations.
