To the Environmental Commissioner and whomsoever else it may concern:

We have made modest but promising progress in Ontario over the last several decades in environmental conservation, protection, and progressive policies that will help to deter environmental emergencies and economic hardships. We’ve also had setbacks and false steps, such as the Green Energy Act’s overlooking the chaotic and costly rush to solar power, or the politically motivated cancellation of power plants on different sides of the party lines.

This cap and trade program, while certainly not perfect, is a large step in the right direction. Perhaps most importantly, it’s a chance for Ontarians to define our own choices in fighting climate change. If we cancel it as this Act is intending to, we are inviting costly political battles and potentially legal battles with the Federal government. Rather than saving money, effecting positive change in industry, and helping to mitigate climate change’s worst effects, we would simply be adding cost to the system by reversing a decision that already cost us all time and money.

This unilateral cancellation is an example of bad government, certainly not government for the people. If the government has reasonable options for reform, that would be worthwhile to consider, but an out-and-out cancellation is doing no service to Ontarians. If a contractor demolished my shed, and then left the rubble while blaming the previous contractor who built it, and blaming the laws of the land for not allowing him to leave the rubble there...well, it goes without saying that I would fire that contractor.

For the above reasoning and more, I urge the Ontario government not to pass this bill - but I do encrouage them to work to improve upon what we’ve already built together. What is now an open brawl with the Federal government could be a collaborative endeavour, with funding as part of it. Ontarians deserve good government. Let’s please see some before the next contractor gets a turn.

Sincerely,
A Conderned Conservative Citizen
