I wish to register my unhappiness at the cancelling of Bill 4: Cap and Trade Cancellation act, 2018.
By cancelling 752 existing contracts: 10 of which sought international and aboriginal input is nothing short of insanity.
I understand that an incoming new government wishes to put its stamp on the face of Ontario, but surely it is essential to have a firm plan in place to alter and adjust versus outright anhillation of the previous excellent work done, not just by the previous government alone, but with major consultations throughout the province with all stakeholders. The plan was showing positive outcome, as indicated by the Commissioner in her environmental report.
The existing plan and contracts should be held while your new government seeks to make what is sees as necessary adjustments. This act will put the province back untold years and exacerbate climate change disasters which will cost far more in money and impact everyone on many levels.
We must have strong government regulations with:
Clear science based greenhouse gas emission targets, legal obligations to stay within those targets and reliable reports to the public.
There must be polluter pay penalties for both individuals and business; regulations for vehicles and buildings
The monies raised can then go back into the system to fund more energy efficient projects.
Other countries and States south of the border are doing things better and well; why are you going to reinvent the wheel?
Please reconsider Bill 4 and at the very least reinstate the projects that were going to make a real difference.
