Streamlining Waste Management permissions for Hazardous Waste Systems- by enabling permit by rule in the EASR, removing right of appeal, removing public input, and removing government oversight- What could go wrong?!

I need a strong cup of coffee to be sure I've read this correctly. In an industrial area already known for frequent NON-COMPLIANCE, the government is proposing that asbestos waste, hazardous materials waste, toxic substances, and biomedical and biohazardous waste all be exempted from any rigorous application and inspection process, from any public input, and from any appeal process. Additionally, should any spills or accidents occur, the fine levels are so low, that proper cleanup and legal responsibilities are miniscule- a tap on the wrist.

Perhaps you don't recall Walkerton and the ecoli disaster that sickened hundreds, left many with debilitating permanent damage, and killed 6 people. After that debacle, regulations re: hazardous agricultural waste and safe water management protocols were tightened considerably- Clearly relying on someone's word that everything was fine wasn't enough.

We have made wonderful advances in Science that keep us protected from greed that might overlook regulations occasionally, or that might cut corners now and then. We elect our governments to track potential dangers to our citizens, and ensure that there are knowledgeable scientists and protocols in place to protect us. CLEARLY asbestos, hazardous materials waste, toxic substances, biomedical and biohazardous waste should NEVER be stored or transported without responsible application processes, trained/licensed operators, and defined protocols for public input, appeal and suitable consequences. I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT SUPPORT Permit by Rule in transport and storage of hazardous materials.
