Re: ERO 019-6853 – Streamlining permissions for water takings for construction site dewatering activities and foundation drains.
I do not support proposed changes in ERO 019-6853.
Proposed changes remove groundwater taking limits, allowing up to 379,000 litres of groundwater to be removed per day without a permit. There is no requirement to notify conservation authorities and public consultation is restricted. Altering groundwater puts eco-systems, municipal infrastructure and human health at risk.
This proposal conflicts with the goals of Ontario Regulations, including the Ontario Water Resources Act and the Clean Water Act, which were developed to protect water resources and eco-systems.
Our government must ensure proper oversight and review of water-taking permits, and welcome public input and discussion on this important topic.
History has proven that many companies cannot be depended on to make environmental protection a priority. Government checks and balances, oversight and enforcement of regulations is essential to hold companies responsible for complying with Ontario’s high standards to protect water resources and the environment.
Strong government and public scrutiny are imperative to ensure for a healthy environment now and for future generations.
